Volvic’s  journey started around 13,500 years ago, when volcanoes in the French region of Auvergne erupted and formed an impervious bedrock – an immense natural water filter. Volvic’s volcanic natural mineral water originates from the depths of those protected volcanoes, in an impluvium where it gets filtered for five years featuring rich natural environments, including forests and wetlands, and remarkable biodiversity typical of volcanic ecosystems. This gives Volvic its unique mineral composition and crisp taste. It also contributes to the vibrancy of Volvic’s Aquadrinks - Volvic natural mineral water combined with a mix of natural fruits, flavors, or leaves. Today, Volvic provides a variety of healthy and tasty beverage options for every occasion.

Volvic's composition

Volvic’s natural mineral water begins its journey as rainwater before it infiltrates the ground of Volvic’s preserved and protected impluvium, to be filtered through six layers of volcanic rock for five years. It offers pure at source natural mineral water, characterized by its unique volcanic mineral composition. The long underground journey protects the water against potential pollution caused by human activity. It is bottled directly at our source, without requiring any chemical treatment.

Protecting the Volvic source

The volcanic ecosystem surrounding the Volvic source, including the impluvium, has specific geological and hydrological characteristics. For more than 20 years, Volvic has implemented initiatives aimed at supporting the protection of this local environment and its biodiversity.

In 2006, Volvic co-founded, together with four local communities in the impluvium area, the CEPIV (Environmental Committee for the Protection of the Volvic Impluvium). This public-private partnership coordinates actions with local stakeholders to manage the catchment area.

These actions include support for agricultural practices with reduced environmental impact, contributions to local infrastructure projects, and partnerships with NGOs (such as LPO and CENA) on biodiversity-related initiatives around the source.

Energy use and carbon footprint monitoring

Since January 2020, the Volvic plain water bottling site has been powered by 100% renewable energy. This comes from sources including  solar and wind power, and biogas fuel, produced by the decomposition of organic waste. Volvic has been working, for example, on the supply chain to investigate lower carbon transportation alternatives and distance efficiency. 78% of Volvic destined for the UK travels from the bottling site by train*, which has a carbon footprint up to 10 times lower than diesel fuelled truck**.
