In 1919 in Barcelona, Isaac Carasso recognised the health benefits of fermented milk for children suffering from intestinal issues. Manufacturing the first ferments – and naming them after his son Daniel – Isaac began to sell 'Danone' yogurt products as a health food to pharmacies.

Some 100 years later, our portfolio is still rooted in the belief that fermented products are a core part of daily life. Indeed, fermented dairy products are a traditional part of many food cultures across the world. Building on the proximity of our brands, our dairy portfolio reflects the simple, natural and sustainable way we meet people’s desire for better-for-you, great-tasting and locally produced foods.

We continue to reformulate and innovate with our products to offer healthy, tasty options to our shoppers. This includes launching new products as well, such as:

  • Activia Kefir, which combines our Activia live culture strains alongside authentic kefir yeasts to create a unique blend of 16 strains, plus calcium to support gut health. 
  • Danone SKYR, which is naturally high in protein and 0% fat, including offering a no added sugar plain yogurt option in our portfolio to meet consumer preferences.

The rise in flexitarianism creates demand for a broader range of products across our markets. As consumers add more plant-based products to their diets, we are committed to offering them more choice. Our strategic move into plant-based food and drinks with Alpro in 2017 was a fundamental and significant step in expanding our portfolio. It reflects our commitment to bring a wider choice to all consumers, especially the growing number of flexitarians looking to diversify their protein sources, and people with dietary constraints or preferences. Our consumers now have a range of dairy and plant-based products to choose from, including our new Alpro Plant Protein range.

Preserving and regenerating nature

With close relationships with over 64,000 farmers worldwide, agriculture is at the core of our business and is one of the most significant ways we can create positive economic, societal, and environmental impact. Danone is working to develop and promote regenerative models of agriculture that reduce emissions and water use, protect soil, empower farmers, and promote animal welfare. Since 2017, Danone has supported the implementation of 25 agriculture projects in 14 different countries.

A trailblazer in plant-based dairy alternative products in Europe, Alpro aims to help people make positive choices when it comes to food, through its tasty variety of plant-based alternatives to yogurt, plant-based beverages, plant-based desserts and coffee drinks.

In 2023 we introduced our GetPRO brand in the UK. Our deliciously high in protein range aims to help people get more from their workouts.

Danone Skyr

Danone Skyr is inspired by the traditional Icelandic dairy product, known for its rich, creamy texture whilst being naturally high protein and 0% fat.
