Actimel contains not just Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus (the bacteria that turns milk into yogurt), we also add our exclusive bacteria, Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. Luckily, when our scientists discovered it they named it something a bit more catchy: L. casei Danone®. L. casei Danone was selected from a wide collection of cultures. Thanks to its association with the two other bacteria, the result was the delicious Actimel taste and texture we know today with 20 billion of live L. casei Danone per bottle.

Unlike other fermented milk products, Actimel undergoes a specific fermentation process, which enables L. casei Danone to grow in the best conditions and our shots to come out with 20 billion cultures. As a result of our strict and dedicated quality control plan, we ensure that Actimel reaches your hands with at least this amount of cultures.

Our scientific expertise

30 years of Actimel

In 1990, we discovered our own bacterial culture and named it L.casei Danone. We created a unique slow fermentation process, allowing the cultures to grow in the best possible conditions. This allows us to pack billions of these cultures into every bottle of our Actimel, which also contain vitamin D and B6 for immune support*.

Launched in Belgium in 1994, Actimel has since become the number one dairy immune support* shot in Europe¹ and is now sold in over 26 countries worldwide.

Removing labels from our Actimel bottles

At Actimel, we’re not only committed to supporting your immune system*, but we have also advanced in reducing our environmental impact through innovative packaging. That’s why we removed the plastic label that used to surround our Actimel bottles. Instead, we replaced the labels with embossed data, which will save approximately 135 tonnes of plastic per year.**
