The Ramsar International Convention
:: For the last 10 years, Danone and Evian have been partners in the Ramsar International Convention. This intergovernmental treaty, organised under the auspices of UNESCO, has permitted the classification and protection of 1,676 wetlands throughout the world, all remarkable in terms of their biodiversity.
Marshes, paddy fields, mangrove swamps, peat bogs… Wetlands are areas where the main factor that influences the ecosystem is water. They cover around 10% of the surface area of the planet and in a multitude of ways are indispensable. For millions of persons it is their unique source of drinking water, but they also feed underground water tables, regulate water flows, and stock a considerable proportion of the planet’s CO2…
Every year on 2 February, Ramsar organises the World Wetlands Day to sensitise the general public and decision makers to the enormous challenge the protection of water resources represents for the protection of the planet. This year, Danone and Evian have decided to provide more support for Ramsar by creating the Water Conservation Schools.
