The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) assesses Danone's worldwide leadership in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria for the 13th consecutive year.
SAM, the investment boutique focused exclusively on Sustainability Investing, and Dow Jones Indexes, a leading global index provider, recently announced the 2011 results of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) annual review.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes were launched in 1999 as the first global sustainability benchmarks. They track the stock performance of the world's leading companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria and serve as benchmarks for investors who integrate sustainability considerations into their portfolios.
The DJSI follows a best-in-class approach, including companies across all industries that outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics. Each year, SAM invites the world’s 2,500 largest companies from the 57 sectors to report on their sustainability performance. In the end, the index thus represents the top 10% of these 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Global Total Stock Market.
In the Food Producer sector, SAM Group selects and assesses each year more than 70 sustainability leaders on 3 dimensions: Economic, Environmental and Social. Remaining part of the DJSI is challenging as year after year, the criteria are more demanding. It means that all the companies have to continually improve their sustainability performance to be selected.
Danone has been part of the DJSI since the index creation in 1999.
In september 2011, Danone was part of the DJSI for the 13th consecutive year with a global score of 81 points: the closest to the best score in the Food Producer sector which is composed of only 9 selected worldwide Companies.
Danone's performance in the Environmental dimension (total score: 84) is strong and long lasting with best scores on environmental reporting, environmental policy/management system, packaging fields and raw materials sourcing since several years.
As for the Social dimension (total score: 75) Danone reached best scores in two criterias : Talent Attraction & Retention and Social reporting. Danone is also very close to the best score for its Standards for Suppliers (1 point away from the best score).
Finally, in the Economic dimension (total score: 83), Danone has made huge progress in both Health & Nutrition and Innovation Management and its global performance has improved of 10 points in this criteria.
