Danone.communities
:: DANONE created the danone.communities fund as a way of promoting social innovation and to support and promote social businesses in line with DANONE' mission.
The idea behind danone.communities is to offer a unique investment fund for anyone interested in making a meaningful, prudent investment designed to promote new models for development (ie, Grameen Danone Foods in Bangladesh)
The experience, launched in 2006, opened the way to an entirely new social business model designed to generate a form of profitability but whose main priority was to maximise benefits to society as a whole. In Bangladesh, for example, the Shoktidoi yoghurt is sold for the highly affordable price of 5 BDT (around 6 euro cents) and, within three years should provide an income to almost 1,600 people. 50 employees will be directly employed in the plant and the distribution system that has been selected should enable hundreds of women to be recruited.
DANONE will obtain its supplies in priority from farmers that have created or developed their businesses thanks to Grameen microcredits, guaranteeing them a stable milk price.
*Structured by Crédit Agricole, a leading European bank, the danone.communities fund aims for a return equal to the money-market rate less actual management expenses.
