When Danone was first created in Spain in 1919, its first yoghurt was sold in pharmacies for a “lighter digestion”. The Company’s fundamental DNA has been firmly rooted from the very start: it aims to provide consumers with healthy food. We are convinced that food is an inexhaustible source of pleasure, well-being and health. Hence Danone focuses on a unique portfolio of products: beneficial to health on a daily basis, they carefully integrate and keep up to date with the recommendations of local and international health authorities.

DAIRY: WONDERFULLY RICH WITH NUTRIENTS/ ESSENTIAL IN THE DAILY DIET

Fresh Dairy Products play a central role in people’s daily diet. Did you know that, in their simple and enjoyable way, dairies provide your body with essential nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus and vitamins B2 and B12? They can also act specifically on digestive comfort or complement treatments related to gastrointestinal diseases!

That’s why our Research teams work to develop products with superior sensory qualities, in tune with local needs and consumer eating preferences. In order to do that, they apply their tremendous know-how to two domains: technology and science.

Currently, Danone Nutricia Research keeps moving forward with international institutions to strengthen its expertise in the field of pre- and probiotics. Our teams are actively involved in the in-depth study of the intestinal microbiota (gut flora). It’s the cornerstone of our scientific strategy for the products of tomorrow.

WATER: THE ONLY INDISPENSABLE DAILY ELEMENT/ INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR A BETTER HYDRATION

Water is vital. Depending on one’s age, the proportion of water in the body varies from 75% for young children to 55% for the elderly. It is the only nutritional element that the body needs daily to maintain its physiological and physical functions.

Therefore, assessing the impact of hydration and dehydration on health is central for Research in the Waters division.

Since water is also one of our most precious natural resource, our R&D teams develop strategies to protect it and reduce our carbon footprint. First, by using the minimum packaging required, by employing 100% recyclable materials, by working with ever-greater quantities of recycled materials (Bonafont, Evian), and by developing partially plant-based bottles (Volvic, Lanjarón already at 25%). Second, by working on solutions to preserve and protect springs and groundwaters.

EARLY LIFE NUTRITION: STAND BY MUMS TO NURTURE NEW LIVES

Nutrition in the early stages of a child’s development determines, in a large part, his or her health as an adult. Given the specific nutritional needs of infants and young children for optimal growth and development, the quality of their diet can therefore have a profound impact on their health later in life.

That’s why Danone Early Life Nutrition’s R&D focuses on building a solid health foundation in early life. Our teams are constantly working on improving digestibility in order to support the development of immature digestive systems. Early Life Nutrition Programming is another research axis. Because we now know that nutritional experiences at various critical stages of life (both pre- and post-birth) condition one’s development, metabolism and future health.

MEDICAL NUTRITION: A PART OF HEALTHCARE

Medical Nutrition focuses exclusively on research-based scientifically proven nutrition, developed to meet the needs of individuals for whom a normal diet is not sufficient or possible. Medical Nutrition works in close partnership with the medical community.

Its unique product portfolio is designed to provide healthcare professionals with a whole range of nutritional options accurately targeted to support their patients’ specific diets and needs. In most cases, these products are essential to a patient’s quality of life. For some, they are necessary to survival.

Therefore, our Medical Nutrition’s R&D activities always focus on developing products grounded in science. Their efficacy is proven through clinical trials and by working with the best-in-class partners in each field of activities.

Medical Nutrition also works with hospitals and institutions to develop the health economic aspects of our business and enhance the many cost-benefits derived from the better nutritional support of patients.
