Progress

PROGRESS

Within “Progress”, we build bridges between science and nutrition in order to contribute to people’s health.

Food can bring new nutritional solutions. Don’t you want to discover these benefits as a consumer?

In order to deliver this knowledge, our R&D teams partner with the world’s top experts to deepen and renew their proficiency regarding the impact of diet on the human body at any age.

WHEN EXPERTISE SUPPORTS INNOVATION

Every day, we translate our knowledge and discoveries into daily improvements and developments in Danone products. This is our mission.

It requires a multidisciplinary approach to better understand the human body’s physiological functions (digestion, cognition, renal function, immune system, cardiovascular system, etc.). But also to study the influence of diet on these functions.

To that end, Danone Nutricia Research has devoted scientific expertise to increase knowledge regarding the intestinal physiology and microbiota, as well as lactic acid bacteria, probiotics and prebiotics.

A FOCUS ON THE INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA

For a few years now, Danone Nutricia Research has been focusing on the intestinal microbiota. The microbiota is truly a fascinating feature of the human body. It plays a role on how you digest certain food, influences your immune system and protects you from certain bacteria.

Our R&D teams use the latest techniques in genomics, cell biology and robotics to work on these topics. They also focus their knowledge on the areas most likely to support their categories amongst consumers.

Regarding the link between nutrition and human physical and cognitive functions for example, hydration science has made significant breakthroughs. Over the years, it has demonstrated the beneficial impact of hydration. On the contrary, it has evidenced the negative effects of dehydration on mood and memory, and those of poor hydration, especially on weight issues.

INTENSIVE RESEARCH FOR A GOOD START IN LIFE

80% of health throughout our lifetime is determined by our development. That’s why early life is absolutely crucial!

Danone Nutricia Research supports the WHO's global public health recommendations calling for exclusive breast-feeding for the first six months of life; then continued breast-feeding up to two years along with safe and appropriate complementary food.

Inspired by our research on the human milk, we pioneer in modulating the gut microbiota. Our scientists investigate the complex interactions between nutrition, digestion and microbiota. They study its influence on brain development, the immune system, and optimal growth. They focus on dietary solutions designed for infants and children with allergy. Our metabolic programming teams scrutinise the role of early life nutrition in the metabolic function, the body composition and the risk for diseases later in life. All this in order to lay the foundation for healthy ageing.

FOR A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE

Medical Nutrition Research teams have designed programmes monitoring the impact of nutrition to help people live longer, healthier lives. We focus on advanced nutrition in paediatric care, elderly care, medical care and active aging.

For instance, our neurosciences experts have been evaluating the effects of a nutrient combination on neurodegeneration, synaptogenesis and cognitive function.

This broad area of research encompasses programmes designed to develop advanced medical nutrition for adults at risk of frailty due to Alzheimer’s disease or disease-related malnutrition.

ELINE V., RESEARCH DIRECTOR

"Cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, allergies, obesity… Science has clearly established that these health issues has more to do with the environmental factors that impact infants and young children and with the nutrition they receive in the early stages of life, than with their genetic profile or adult lifestyle. Nutrition before and during pregnancy, as well as in the early postnatal life, is particularly influential. Epigenetic markers, now identified, can provide us with an effective toolbox, which will help us understand more clearly the impact of nutrition on the human development."
